Jesus Christ

The sayings of Jesus of Nazareth reach us through the four Gospels of the New Testament, written in Greek in the decades after his death and preserved in an enormous manuscript tradition. On this site they are quoted from the King James Version (1611) and other public-domain English translations, cited by book, chapter and verse so any line can be checked against the text. Translation matters more here than almost anywhere: the same verse can sound quite different in the King James, the Revised Standard or the Jerusalem Bible, and a line remembered from childhood is often a blend of several. We name the version we are quoting.
