Widely shared as a Buddha quote, but this sentence does not appear in the Pali Canon. Its actual source is almost certainly the modern Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, whose writing links love and understanding in exactly these terms. The idea is authentically Buddhist; the attribution is not.
