What it means
Two words carry the line: invented and cover. Respect is not being called a smaller virtue — it is being called a device, made deliberately, for a purpose, and the purpose is concealment rather than repair. A cover leaves the empty place exactly as empty as it found it.
People quote this as a case for passion over dutiful affection, but the sentence argues nothing about passion and recommends nothing at all. It is a diagnosis, and one delivered by a character with everything at stake in the quarrel she is standing in — which is worth keeping in view. It is true the way accusations made in bad hours are true: too precise to wave away, too partial to build a life on.
What it teaches you
