— The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), Chapter 4
About this quote
What it means
The sentence is a claim about likeness, not about quality. It does not say home is the best place; it says no place is like it — that home is not substitutable, which is a different and harder claim, because it cannot be defeated by producing somewhere nicer.
The sentimental reading fills it with warmth the words do not contain. It is the plainest sentence in a book full of decorated ones, and its force depends entirely on being said by someone who has seen the alternative; from anyone who has not left, the same words are only a preference.
What it teaches you
The practical use of this line is as a reply to a particular kind of argument — the one that lists features. When someone explains that the other city pays better, that the other team is more prestigious, that the other option is objectively superior, notice that a claim of incomparability is untouched by any of it, and that you are allowed to say so without pretending your place scores higher. The same test runs the other way: an attachment you have never compared to anything is not yet the claim this sentence is making.
Where it comes from
Dorothy, explaining to the Scarecrow why she wants to leave a beautiful country for a grey Kansas farm. In Baum’s book it is an argument, not a wish — she has just said that people of flesh and blood would rather live at home however dreary it is.
The film’s ‘there’s no place like home’ is a spell. Baum’s version is a position, and the Scarecrow immediately disagrees with it.
