About this quote

हिन्दी में

प्रेम ही जीवन का नियम है, और नफ़रत को जीतने का एक ही रास्ता है — प्रेम।

What it means

Two different kinds of claim are welded together here. The law of life is descriptive — love is presented as the way living things actually work, closer to a law of nature than to a commandment. The only way is a claim about method, and it is exclusive: it rules out every other instrument, including the effective-looking ones.

The verb is the surprise. Conquer keeps the entire vocabulary of battle, so the sentence is not asking you to stop opposing hatred or to be pleasant about it. It grants the war and disputes the weapon, which is why it sounds soft and is not.

What it teaches you

When you are set against something you consider hateful, examine the method rather than the target — contempt returned for contempt, the enjoyable sharpness of the reply, the pleasure of the crowd agreeing. The claim on offer is that this method reproduces the thing you are fighting, so the working question is not whether to oppose but what your way of opposing is training you to become.

Where it comes from

Vivekananda’s answer to hatred is not tolerance but love — a stronger and more demanding claim. Tolerance manages a difference; love dissolves the ground the difference stood on.

Widely shared under his name and fully consistent with his Chicago addresses on religious harmony, though we have not traced this exact sentence to a documented lecture. Swami Vivekananda’s lectures and letters are collected in the nine-volume Complete Works, which is fully searchable — so his sayings can be checked, and we flag the ones that cannot.
