About this quote

What it means

The load-bearing word is ability. The sentence is not ranking duties and not recommending a tactic; it is making a claim about capacity — of the two things a person might attempt, the one actually within reach is the change in themselves.

Read carelessly it becomes a licence to stop caring about public life, which is more than the words support: what it denies is an ability, not a project. It is also routinely fused with be the change, which promises that self-change moves the world. This line offers no such promise, and is the harder sentence for it.

What it teaches you

Take a complaint you have made more than once this month — about an office, a family, a city — and split it into the part that needs other people’s consent and the part that needs only yours. The single practical thing this line contains is that the second list is where your leverage sits, and most people have never written that list out, which is why the complaint stays in circulation.

Where it comes from

Attributed to Gandhi but not found in his Collected Works — a modern rewording of his documented view that the reform of oneself is the beginning of any larger change.
