A popular paraphrase rather than a canonical sentence. Its ancestor is the Bhaddekaratta Sutta (Majjhima Nikaya 131): ‘Let not a person revive the past or on the future build his hopes… let him with insight see each presently arisen state.’ The paraphrase keeps the sense while modernising the words.
