About this quote

What it means

The line is built as a question and it never closes. It does not announce that the others are mad; it reports that the speaker cannot tell which way the answer falls, and the rhyme of hazy with crazy does real work — the haze is exactly the state of not knowing.

It is almost always quoted the other way round, as a compliment the misunderstood pay themselves: the world is mad, I am the sane one. Read as written, the speaker is one of the two candidates on the ballot. That is what makes it worth keeping — a joke that includes the joker.

What it teaches you

The next time you are the only one objecting in a meeting or a family argument, notice that you are holding two hypotheses, not one, and that you have not yet tested either. Ask what you would expect to see if you were the one who had it wrong, then go look for that.

Where it comes from

Widely attributed to Einstein and printed in many collections, but no primary source — letter, interview, or manuscript — has been reliably traced. We flag it as attributed: possibly genuine, not verifiable.
