The fate of nations lies in the hands of individuals; every individual is a star in the destiny of the community.
What it means
From a poem in which an old Baloch father advises his son. It is Iqbal’s khudi argument carried into politics: the community is not an abstraction that acts on its own, it is the sum of selves, so the work of building a nation is done one person at a time.
What it teaches you
The practical force of this line is that it removes an excuse. Sentences that begin the country should or our community must describe no one who can act, and they are comfortable for exactly that reason. The next time you finish such a diagnosis, convert it into the smallest version that belongs to you alone — the vote, the hire, the fee you refuse to take, the student you actually teach — and do that instead of restating the diagnosis. The star image is worth reading carefully too: a single star does not light the sky, so the couplet is not promising that your effort will be visible or decisive. It only says the sky is made of nothing else.

क़ौमों की तक़दीर अफ़राद के हाथ में है — हर फ़र्द मिल्लत के मुक़द्दर का सितारा है। इक़बाल की ‘ख़ुदी’ का सियासी रूप: क़ौम कोई अलग चीज़ नहीं, अफ़राद का जोड़ है।
जब भी आप कहें कि ‘क़ौम को यह करना चाहिए’, उसे तुरंत उस सबसे छोटे काम में बदलिए जो सिर्फ़ आपके हाथ में है — वरना वह सिर्फ़ एक आरामदेह शिकायत है। और याद रखिए, एक सितारा अकेले आसमान रौशन नहीं करता, पर आसमान बनता भी सितारों से ही है।
