About this quote

English: O foolish heart, what has happened to you? What, after all, is the cure for this pain?

Meaning: The simplest lines Ghalib ever wrote, and among his most beloved. The poet interrogates his own heart like a worried friend — knowing well that for this particular illness, no pharmacy stocks the cure.

An authentic couplet from the Divan-e-Ghalib, the collected Urdu ghazals of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib (1797–1869), from the ghazal beginning “dil-e-nadaan tujhe hua kya hai”. Transliteration and English rendering are our own.
