About this quote

English: Granted, you will not be neglectful — but I shall be dust by the time the news reaches you.

Meaning: Not an accusation but a timetable: even the beloved’s best intentions travel slower than a lover’s mortality. Ghalib’s politeness — ‘granted, you would not neglect me’ — makes the despair cut deeper.

An authentic couplet from the Divan-e-Ghalib, the collected Urdu ghazals of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib (1797–1869), from the ghazal beginning “aah ko chahiye ik umr”. Transliteration and English rendering are our own.
