— The Dhammapada, verse 99 (tr. F. Max Müller, 1881)
About this quote
What it means
The first three words make a flat assertion — forests are delightful — and the rest of the verse quietly explains that the delight is not in the forest. One place is being looked at by two kinds of people, and it is the looking that differs. The world finds nothing there because there is nothing there to want, and that absence is precisely what the passionless find agreeable.
It is worth keeping because it works as a diagnostic rather than a recommendation. It does not tell anyone to go to the forest. It says that what you feel in a place with nothing on offer will tell you what you have been carrying in — and the mark it names is not endurance of emptiness but actual pleasure in it, which is a much higher bar.
What it teaches you
Notice what happens in the first ten minutes of an unplanned hour — not whether you fill it, but whether the emptiness arrives as relief or as something needing repair. That reaction is a live reading of the size of your current appetites, and it is the only part of this verse you can observe in yourself; the rest describes someone further along, not a posture to imitate.
Where it comes from
This is verse 99 of the Dhammapada, from the chapter called The Venerable — the portrait of the perfected one whose senses are stilled.
The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 verses in Pali, among the oldest and most widely read records of the Buddha’s teaching. This English translation is by F. Max Müller (1881), the pioneering Oxford scholar of Indian texts; the verse number is cited with this quote.
