— Mother Teresa, sayings collected by the Missionaries of Charity
About this quote
What it means
The two sentences do different jobs. The first is a wish, and on its own it is unfalsifiable. The second converts it into a test with a definite moment of measurement — the other person’s exit — which moves the standard off your intentions, for which you can always vouch, and onto an outcome only the visitor can report.
Notice how demanding no one ever is: it covers the dull, the interrupting and the hostile, not the people you would have been warm to anyway. And notice what the line does not ask for. It does not require you to feel loving; you may be tired and entirely unmoved. The whole burden is on whether the person leaves lighter than they arrived.
What it teaches you
Run the check at the end of the encounters you did not choose: the caller who keeps you on the phone, the junior asking what you have already explained twice, the person on the other side of a counter. Ask whether they left lighter or heavier, and when the answer is heavier, look at what you actually did — it is usually hurry, or a correction that was accurate and unnecessary.
Where it comes from
Genuine Mother Teresa in substance — recorded among her sayings collected by the Missionaries of Charity: ‘Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house… let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.’
