— Attributed to Rumi; a famous modern English rendering, not a literal translation
About this quote
What it means
Both halves are precise. Acting small makes it conduct rather than belief — the target is a set of behaviours, not your opinion of yourself — and motion makes the self an event rather than an object, something happening rather than a thing with edges you could measure.
It is now used as pure inflation: you are magnificent, addressed to the individual. The grammar will not carry that, because if you are the universe in motion there is no separate small self left over to feel grand about it. The sentence removes the very item it appears to be complimenting, which is why it lands as a rebuke.
What it teaches you
Look for the behaviours rather than the feeling: the request you shrank before making it, the apology attached to a reasonable ask, the meeting you sat through without saying the thing. Those are the acting the line objects to, and each one is fixable in a single sentence, unlike your self-image.
Where it comes from
Rumi’s most-quoted rebuke to modesty. It is not a self-esteem slogan — the claim is metaphysical, that the self is not a small item inside the universe but a local expression of the whole thing, and that acting small is therefore a factual error.
A famous modern English rendering. Rumi (1207–1273) wrote in Persian; almost every English line shared online is a modern rendering rather than a literal translation. Sourced passages from the Masnavi, with their selection titles, are collected under Rumi on Love.
