Love has made me useless, Ghalib — otherwise I too was a man of some worth.
What it means
The most quoted complaint in Urdu poetry, delivered with a shrug and a smile. Ghalib blames love for his ruin while letting you hear how little he regrets it.
The vocabulary is borrowed from the labour market, not from romance: nikamma and kaam ke are the words used of a tool that no longer works or a servant no longer worth keeping. Ghalib accepts the world’s measuring stick and then quietly steps off it. The real weight sits on bhi — I too — a claim that he could have succeeded on their terms, had he bothered. And the tense settles it: the, was. He never once says he wants it back. The couplet is often quoted as a lament for wasted potential, or borrowed as an excuse for idleness, but nobody who regretted the trade would boast about the exchange rate.
What it teaches you
Watch the sentence X ruined me. Half the time it is a boast wearing the grammar of a complaint, and the tell is simple: ask whether you would undo it. If you would not, stop describing the thing as something that happened to you — say instead that you chose it and that it cost you standing, money, or a career. Naming a cost you accepted is honest; naming it as damage someone else did is a way of keeping the credit without paying for it.

जब भी आप कहें कि ‘फ़लाँ चीज़ ने मुझे बर्बाद कर दिया’, ख़ुद से पूछिए — क्या आप उसे वापस बदलना चाहेंगे? अगर नहीं, तो वह हादसा नहीं आपका चुनाव था, और उसे चुनाव कहकर उसकी क़ीमत भी खुलकर मान लीजिए।
