What it means
Watch the shape of the sentence. A sweeping claim of identity — time is just another dimension — followed by an except that quietly contains the entire human experience of time. Everything that makes time feel unlike space (that you are carried through it, one way, without stopping) has been demoted to a footnote on an otherwise clean equivalence. That demotion is the argument, not an aside to it.
The claim has aged unusually well and unusually badly at once. Later physics did come to treat time as a fourth coordinate alongside the three of space, which is more vindication than most fiction gets. But it also treats that coordinate as differently signed — you cannot turn around in it the way you can turn around in a corridor. The exception the sentence waves past turns out to be the part that does not reduce.
What it teaches you
Learn the move rather than the conclusion, because you will meet it constantly: A and B are identical, except for C. Check whether C is the thing you actually cared about. Here it is — the one-way passage of consciousness is the whole of what we mean by time in daily life — and the sentence is persuasive precisely because putting it after except makes it feel already accounted for. The same construction shows up in pricing, in policy, and in every technical comparison you will read this year.

The argument is doing real work: if time is a fourth dimension, movement along it is a question of engineering rather than magic. Most time-travel fiction since has been built on this paragraph.
