What it means
Read the reasons the line gives, because they are the surprising part. It does not say don’t walk ahead of me, that would be arrogant. It says I may not follow — and I may not lead. Both refusals are confessions about the speaker, not complaints about the friend. He is disqualifying himself from both ends of a hierarchy: don’t rely on me to guide you, and don’t expect me to fall in behind you either. What is left, beside, is the only position he can honestly promise to hold.
On attribution: this is printed almost everywhere under Albert Camus’s name, and it does not appear in his published work; the same three lines also circulate under several other names and as an anonymous proverb. The popular reading also drifts — it is quoted as a demand for equal treatment, a mild rebuke to friends who take charge. The text is doing something less flattering to its speaker: it is admitting unreliability in advance.
What it teaches you
The useful move here is the self-assessment, not the request. Before you accept the role of someone’s mentor, guide, or guru — or agree to follow someone else’s plan out of loyalty — check whether you can actually hold that position for as long as it will be needed. Saying I can walk beside you on this, but don’t make me the one who decides is a real answer, and it is more honest than accepting a role you will quietly abandon. Notice too that beside carries no agreed destination: it is company, not a commitment to where the other person is going.
