About this quote

What it means

This is a definition, and it is doing its work through one word: manifestation. Not transfer, not filling, not building. The claim is that the material is already present in the learner and the whole of teaching is the act of making it visible — which makes education a process of removal rather than addition, and quietly denies that a teacher is the source of anything.

Keep it for how much it overturns once accepted. If perfection is already in every person, then a class cannot be ranked by how much was put in, and a child who fails is not empty but obstructed. The strong version is also worth stating honestly: perfection already in man is a metaphysical commitment, not a finding about how children learn, and the line asks you to grant it before the pedagogy follows.

What it teaches you

Change the diagnostic question from what is missing to what is in the way. A student who cannot do arithmetic may not lack the faculty; they may be unwilling to be seen getting it wrong, or unable to hear the room, or convinced by an earlier teacher that they are the slow one. Those are obstructions, and they are addressed differently from a gap in content — more explaining makes a gap smaller and an obstruction worse. The same swap applies when you are the learner, stuck on something you have already been taught three times.

Where it comes from

Swami Vivekananda’s definition of education, stated across his lectures and letters and collected in the Complete Works. It compresses his Vedantic conviction: perfection is not poured into a person from outside; teaching only removes the obstructions to what is already there. He offered the parallel definition for religion: ‘the manifestation of the divinity already in man.’
