What it means
The claim is about irreversibility, and that is the whole of it. It does not promise that you stay lovely, or loved, or kept; it says the change is of a kind that nothing afterwards can undo — not neglect, not wear, not being shut in a cupboard. Arriving right after an honest account of what the process costs, the comfort is narrow on purpose.
The poster-and-greeting-card reading turns it into you will always be loved, which is a different and weaker sentence. This one keeps the two apart: love is what did the work, but the work is now a property of the one it was done to, not something the other party still holds in trust. The faintly ungrammatical lasts for always is a child’s phrasing, and part of why it stays in the ear.
What it teaches you
When something ends — a person dies, a friendship lapses, a job that formed you is over — separate what you have lost from what was changed in you, because they are not the same loss and only one of them has actually gone. The contact is gone; the capacities it built are not stored in the other party’s possession and do not leave with them.
