What it means
The whole claim sits in the shift from a property to an event. How you are made covers everything a thing can be praised for on its own terms — materials, finish, design, in a person’s case talent or credentials. The Skin Horse says none of it counts toward Real. Then comes the replacement, and notice its voice: a thing that happens to you. Passive, and with a duration built in. You cannot be Real quickly, and you cannot be Real alone, because something has to happen and someone else has to do it.
The line is very often quoted to mean be authentic, be your true self, which reverses it exactly. That reading makes Real an achievement of the will; the sentence removes it from the will altogether and hands it to time and to other people. What makes it worth keeping is that it is a definition, not an encouragement — and it is an unflattering one, since it means the toy contributes nothing to its own becoming except being available to be worn out.
What it teaches you
Look at the object in your house you would never buy again new — the chipped cup, the shapeless jumper, the pen with the worn grip — and note that its value is entirely a record of use, none of it manufacture. Then apply the same test where it stings: when you assess a person by pedigree, institution or polish, you are grading how they were made, which is the criterion this line rules out. The alternative question is how long, and by whom, they have been held onto.
