About this quote
What it means
The grammar carries the argument. Three qualities are listed as essentials to success — things a striver can practise, measure and fail at — and then the sentence changes direction with above all and adds a fourth that is not described as essential to success at all. Love is not the fourth item on the list; it is ranked over the list, and the two halves are answering different questions. The three decide whether the effort holds together. The fourth decides what the effort was for.
Worth keeping because the usual reading flattens it into a four-point formula, with love as a warm ending. Taken seriously, the sentence concedes something uncomfortable: purity, patience and perseverance can all be executed coldly, and a person can satisfy every one of them and still have built something not worth building. Read this way, purity leans as much on undividedness of motive as on conduct — the three describe a clean, undistracted, durable effort, and none of them can tell you whom it serves.
What it teaches you
Test the three separately, because they fail separately and people usually have two. Perseverance without patience is pushing hard at the wrong tempo and calling the exhaustion virtue; patience without perseverance is waiting with good manners; either without purity is a divided aim that leaks effort in two directions. Find which one is yours, and then ask the question the last clause exists to force — who is better off if this succeeds. If the only honest answer is you, the sentence says you have the three and not the thing ranked above them.
Where it comes from
His three P’s, with a fourth quietly added at the end that outranks them all. Purity, patience and perseverance are the qualities a striver can practise; love is the one that decides what the striving was for.
