What it means
The machinery here is a concession followed by a reversal. The line grants at the outset that being talked about is bad — it offers something worse — so it never defends gossip or scandal at all; it merely ranks them above obscurity. Anyone quoting it as a shrug at criticism is using a sentence that agrees with the critic and then changes the subject.
It is worth keeping for what the ranking assumes: a world in which a person exists only while being discussed, so silence is not peace but disappearance. State that assumption plainly and the epigram stops being funny — which is roughly the distance between a drawing room and the rest of life.
What it teaches you
When someone says they do not care what people say about them, listen for whether they are rejecting the judgement or simply preferring it to being ignored — the two sound identical and lead to opposite decisions. Applied to yourself: before chasing attention on any platform, check whether you want the specific response or only the proof that you were noticed.

Lord Henry again, in the opening chapter, on reputation. Wilde knew the territory: within five years of publishing this novel he would be tried and imprisoned, with the book itself quoted against him in court.
The line is usually offered as cheerful advice about publicity. Its author’s life gives it a much darker second reading.
