About this quote
What it means
The governing word is grow. Growth can be fed, watered and protected, but it cannot be installed from outside on a schedule — which is why the sentence denies one specific transaction: spirituality as transferable content, handed over by someone who has it to someone who does not.
What is easy to miss is that this removes an excuse as well as a shortcut. If nobody can make you spiritual, then nobody can be blamed for failing to — not a guru who disappointed you, not a tradition you were born outside of, not a teacher you never found.
What it teaches you
Compare the hours you spend choosing between teachers, lineages, books and apps against the hours spent actually practising; if the first number is larger, the line is describing your situation. A second check: would you keep the practice going for a month with nobody observing it and nobody to report back to? What survives that month is the part growing from the inside.
Where it comes from
An anti-guru statement from a man who became one of India’s most famous gurus, which is exactly why it is worth taking seriously. A teacher can arrange conditions, remove obstacles and point; the growing itself is not something anyone can do on your behalf.
