— Popular condensation of Bhagavad Gita 10.33-34 and 11.32; not a literal verse
About this quote
What it means
The sentence makes time an agent, not a setting. We usually speak of things happening in time; here time is the one doing it, and it is ranked — placed above every other killer, on the plain ground that its record is perfect. Every other destroyer is selective and eventually finished off itself. This one has no exceptions and no successor.
The line is blunt rather than consoling, and it is often quoted as flat fatalism, as though nothing were worth doing. That reading skips what the ranking actually does: by making time supreme it demotes everybody else. The rival, the illness, the regime, the person who wronged you — none of them are the final cause of anything, because they are on the same list and lower down. The line takes importance away from the destroyers, not from what they destroy.
What it teaches you
When you are certain that some particular person or force is what is ruining your work or your peace, put an expiry date on that force too, and see how the fear resizes. The useful test is the grudge or the dread you have been carrying for months: ask what is left of the offending party, and of the offence, in twenty years. The same measure applies to your own advantages — a position held over others is being counted down by the same clock that counts theirs.
Where it comes from
This echoes Bhagavad Gita 10.33–34 and 11.32, where Krishna declares ‘I am Time’ — kalo ‘smi — ‘among reckoners I am Time’ and, in the vision of the universal form, ‘I am the mighty world-destroying Time.’ The line as phrased here is a popular condensation of those verses.
