What it means
Everything turns on the difference between two words that get used as synonyms: impossible means it cannot have happened, improbable means only that it would surprise you. And Holmes is not guessing at the end of the process — must be is a claim of necessity reached by exhaustion, not a hunch being dressed up in logical clothing.
The popular use is close to an inversion: it gets quoted as permission to believe the outlandish answer because it feels right. It is also often misremembered as eliminating the improbable, which wrecks the logic entirely, since the improbable is precisely what the method expects to be left holding at the end.
What it teaches you
When you reach for this, sort your discarded options into two piles and be honest about which is which: things ruled out by evidence, and things rejected because they were unwelcome, embarrassing, expensive, or would mean starting over. The second pile is where wrong conclusions come from, and in practice it is the larger one.

Where it comes from
Holmes’s best-known principle, and it is not from the short stories at all — it appears here in the second novel, and in variations across the canon. Doyle wrote it without a comma after ‘impossible’.
The method has a real weakness the stories never quite admit: it depends entirely on having listed every possibility, which is exactly the step nobody can verify.
