What it means
It is a question, not a declaration, and what it asks about is the pleasantness of a thought rather than its truth. The content is modest to the point of being merely factual: a day that has not happened yet contains no errors yet. Yet is the honest word in the sentence, and it is the first one people drop when they quote it.
Nothing here predicts that tomorrow will go well, and nothing asks anyone to forget what went wrong today. The line offers only a closing time for the accounts. That narrowness is why it can be said by a child without turning silly.
What it teaches you
Treat it as a rule about when to stop reviewing rather than as a forecast. Once you have decided what you would do differently, further turning-over of the mistake produces nothing new — and note that the line never claims the mistake did not matter, only that the next day has not been spent yet.

Anne Shirley to Marilla, after another of the scrapes that structure the book. Montgomery gives her the line as a habit of mind rather than a philosophy.
Marilla’s reply — that Anne will certainly find plenty of mistakes to make in it — is part of the quotation’s charm and is almost always cut. The exchange works because the novel refuses to let optimism go unanswered.
