It has been long since Ghalib died, yet one remembers him — his way of asking, at every turn: and had it been thus, what then?
What it means
Ghalib writes his own obituary and chooses, as his epitaph, his habit of endless speculation — the incurable ‘what if’. A poet remembered not for answers but for the beauty of his questions.
Notice who is speaking: Ghalib puts his own name in the sentence and then reports his death from outside, in the voice of the people left behind — yaad aata hai has no stated subject, so it is everyone and no one who remembers. What they remember is not a poem or a deed but a verbal tic, and the second line reproduces it word for word, so the couplet performs the very act of recollection it describes. It is usually read as melancholy self-elegy; in the mouth it plays closer to affectionate mimicry, a friend doing an impression of the dead man at a gathering. The sting is in har ek baat par — at every trifle, not at the great losses.
What it teaches you
People remember your habits of speech, not your positions. Worth checking which phrase of yours someone could imitate after twenty years. And take the couplet’s own warning seriously: replaying what if once after a real decision is a post-mortem, replaying it at har ek baat is a loop that produces nothing. Give a finished choice one honest review, write down what you would do differently, and then refuse the question when it comes back a second time.
