कि लगाए न लगे और बुझाए न बने

Love obeys no force, Ghalib — it is the fire that cannot be lit at will, and cannot be put out.
What it means
The definitive statement on love’s autonomy: it cannot be started on purpose nor extinguished on demand. Everything the self-help age says about controlling the heart, Ghalib refuted in two lines.
The second line is built from two failed causatives — lagaaye na lage, bujhaaye na bane — someone tries to light, it does not light; tries to extinguish, it will not be done. The grammar itself keeps putting an agent in and getting no result, so the helplessness is enacted rather than asserted. Worth noticing that both halves fail on the same side: it is the self’s power that comes up short, not the beloved’s willingness. And the claim is narrow — it covers ignition and extinguishing only, saying nothing about conduct in between, which is exactly the stretch it gets used to excuse.
What it teaches you
Stop spending effort on the one thing the couplet says is unavailable: arguing yourself into a feeling or out of one. No amount of listing someone’s faults will end an attachment, and no amount of listing their virtues will manufacture one. What remains in your hands is conduct — whether you message, whether you meet, what you agree to, what you say out loud. Move the energy from managing the fire to choosing the actions, and judge yourself only on the second.
